Composed over three decades, Béla Bartók's six string quartets offer perhaps the most distilled expression of his style and artistic identity as both a modernist and nationalist composer. Weaving together elements of European classical music with the rustic vitality of Eastern European folk dance, the set has been widely regarded as one of the most significant contributions to the genre since Beethoven's pioneering works a century earlier.
Audiences experienced the full arc of his creative development across two concerts, as the Wigmore Hall Medal-winning Takács Quartet performed all six quartets with impeccable technical mastery and musical balance. Prior to the performances, members of the ensemble shared their insights on the cycle in a dialogue hosted by Prof. Chan Hing-yan.
