Regarded as the 'New Testament' of piano literature, Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas chart his creative evolution and stand as a monument to his artistic vision. Closely tied to his identity as both virtuoso and composer, these works embody a distinctive pianistic voice grounded in coherence, imagination, and intellectual depth. The cycle moves from early works shaped by Haydn and Mozart, through the bold formal and harmonic innovations of the middle period, to the radical, introspective language of the late sonatas. It reveals a composer constantly redefining the expressive and structural possibilities of the piano, where drama, lyricism, and humour coexist in a dynamic and evolving musical narrative.
In eight concerts at HKU, Konstantin Lifschitz presented all 32 sonatas with his characteristically thoughtful and distinctive approach. Captured in live recordings released by Alpha Classics on CD and vinyl, these performances were praised by Gramophone as "a brilliant fusion of resonance and structure". The series was complemented by three 'Music in Words' sessions, featuring lectures by Mr. Yang Zhao and Ms. Nancy Loo, and a dialogue between Lifschitz and Prof. Giorgio Biancorosso, offering further insight into this monumental cycle and the interpretation of these works.
