In November 2019, pianist Paul Lewis presented in the HKU MUSE series Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, as a prelude to the composer's 250th birthday celebration. Unfortunately, an entire year of festivities has been lost or affected due to the pandemic. In this conversation with Prof. Daniel Chua (recorded in September 2020), Paul shares with us how he makes use of the lockdown to revisit old repertoire and discover new works, his experience with live streaming, and his reflection on the meaning of live concerts. A heralded interpreter of Beethoven and Schubert, Paul also tells us how he finds their works deeply consoling at this time.
