A programme of Back to Bach Series
One of the most distinguished violists of his generation, Diyang Mei made history in 2022 when he was appointed First Principal Viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker, becoming the first Chinese musician to join the orchestra. His international rise was marked by his First Prize victory at the 2018 ARD International Music Competition in Munich, widely regarded as the most prestigious distinction in the viola world.
Returning to HKU MUSE, Mei presents a rare three-hour recital of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites. Performed on the viola, these iconic works take on a uniquely rich and vocal character, revealing new colours and perspectives while retaining their profound expressive power. Acclaimed for the precision, insight, and eloquence of his interpretations, Mei invites audiences to experience Bach anew through this distinctive sound world.
