“Already one of the finest: perfectly unanimous, colourful, and original” – Alfred Brendel
Founded in Berlin in 2019 and named after the Esperanto word for ‘lionheart’, the Leonkoro Quartet has rapidly risen to international prominence. Within their first three years, they claimed First Prizes at both the Wigmore Hall and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competitions. Capturing hearts across Europe’s leading venues and festivals, their playing unites youthful energy with mature insight, placing them among the most exciting ensembles of their generation.
HKU MUSE proudly presents the Quartet’s Hong Kong debut, inviting music lovers to experience this young ensemble live. Their programme opens with Webern’s lyrical Langsamer Satz, written as an assignment for his teacher Arnold Schoenberg, followed by Jörg Widmann’s Beethoven Study IV, a bold reflection on Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 131. The evening concludes with the Quartet’s full performance of Op. 131, a thrilling summit of passion, vision, and profound intensity.
