(In Cantonese 廣東話主講)
The final episode of ‘Mostly Brahms’ celebrates the apexes of artistry achievements of the composer. After listening to the Meiningen clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, Brahms returned from his creative sabbatical to compose the Clarinet Quintet in B minor. The work features a wide range of symphonic and improvisational gypsy styles as well as lieder melodies alongside themes and variations. In this concert, violist Andrew Ling will take up the clarinet part in the original score, demonstrating the imaginative experimentation on various timbres. To conclude the series, we will feature a work by Schubert, whom Brahms greatly admired. The Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major is a significant piece from Schubert’s late-period that is often compared with Beethoven’s Archduke for its thematic transformations. Andrew will share the stage with his friends to perform these works while highlighting the stylistic convergence and divergence between Brahms and Schubert.
